The Serie A top scorer, thanks to his 24 goals, took the decision on Thursday after he missed his third consecutive spot-kick in last night’s 0-0 draw at Cagliari.

“Wednesday’s penalty has left me very disappointed and bitter,” the Italian international confirmed.

“I already spoke to my teammates last night and I think it would only be right if someone else took them from now on.

“Then, hopefully, I can return to taking them again in the future.”

Boss Cesare Prandelli had also suggested that Toni wouldn’t be asked to step forward again after his recent misfortune.
