Coppa Italia: Di Biagio frustrates Fiorentina

<>Fiorentina will have to win at the Stadio Rigamonti if they are to progress in the Coppa Italia following Brescia’s surprise draw.

The Viola were expected to put a lot of effort into conquering the trophy they last lifted in 2001, but they only qualified from the group phase on goal difference and got off to a poor start in today’s Second Round tie.

The Rondinelle had the first chance after 15 minutes when Cristiano Lupatelli performed a stunning save on Di Pasquale, then Enzo Maresca combined with Javier Portillo only for the Spaniard’s effort to be palmed round the post.

But it was Brescia who broke the deadlock at the dawn of the second half when a free kick was not cleared effectively and Gigi Di Biagio swept in from eight yards. That was the first goal Fiorentina have conceded in the competition this season after three straight clean sheets.

Maresca made way for Fabrizio Miccoli, though it didn’t seem to revive their fortunes too much. It took a stroke of luck for Fiorentina to draw level on 69 minutes when Angelo Di Livio’s cross was accidentally turned into his own net by Martinez.

Lupatelli flew to fingertip Mannini’s long-range drive out, then at the other end Portillo failed to beat Federico Agliardi in a one-on-one situation.

Miccoli was livelier as Fiorentina pushed for a winner in the closing stages, while Maurizio Domizzi tested Lupatelli’s reflexes, but the scoreline remained 1-1 at the final whistle.

The second leg at the Rigamonti is on September 29 and the winner will go on to face Parma in the Quarter-Final.
